The storage jar by Theodor Bogler - The Bauhaus original
The storage jar by Theodor Bogler was designed in 1923 for the first Bauhaus exhibition in Weimar and was the ceramic workshop's first reference object there. It was part of the kitchen set of the revolutionary kitchen of the "Haus am Horn" show house. In addition to a large storage jar, Bogler also designed a small jar for spices, as well as a bottle for vinegar and oil. Common to all parts is the lettering that determines the contents of the container in a specially developed typography. In extensive research, the original lettering was researched and applied to the vessels in the same process as the manufacturer at the time, Velten Vordamm. The Boglerdose has lost none of its topicality and practicality. Following all Bauhaus principles, in times when sustainability plays a major role, it belongs in every kitchen of a conscious design lover.
Theodor Bogler – From Bauhaus Artist to Benedictine Father
After completing his training with Gerhard Marks and Max Krehan, Theodor Bogler developed the so-called combination teapot in the Dornburg workshop. He used the Bauhaus modular system developed by Walter Gropius in ceramics for the first time. In the process, new designs are to be created on the basis of clearly defined molded parts through various combinations. In the case of Theodor Bogler's teapot, 4 different variants were created from the same components. The basis for this was a storage box that was initially created by turning it freely on the potter's wheel and formed the body by cutting it up and plastering it while it was still leather-hard. Further molded parts such as hangers, spouts and handles that were garnished then formed a teapot.
For the first Bauhaus exhibition in Weimar in 1923, Gerhard Muche designed and built the model house on the Horn. Bogler was commissioned to develop storage boxes for the fitted kitchen, which was developed for the first time. The Dornburger storage box served as a basis, which he transformed for series production using the casting process. For this purpose, molds were developed that made the industrialized series production proclaimed by the Bauhaus possible. In 1924, these storage jars went into series production in the Velten Vordamm stoneware factories, which were within walking distance of the HB workshops, and became part of German design history.
In Marwitz workshops, these storage jars were identically handcrafted according to the original molds and using the casting process until the end of 2021.
We are trying to create new framework conditions to resume the production of Bogler's storage vessels in 2022.
