What makes a beautiful Christmas decoration?
Strictly speaking, stylish Christmas decorations belong in every household. After all, Christmas is just around the corner every year. As we all know, you can't argue about taste and everyone who thinks about decorating their home at Christmas has different priorities. Some people buy Christmas decorations, others prefer to make them by hand. And of course the decoration has to somehow fit your own apartment and your personal style. In some countries, such as the USA and Brazil, the quantity and variety of decorations is important. Apartments, gardens and entire streets are decorated here from lavish to decadent. The use of Christmas decorations has a long tradition in Germany. Festively decorated living rooms invite you to linger and enjoy during the contemplative time. Depending on the region, different priorities are set when it comes to decoration. In our latitudes, Christmas decorations are generally rather reserved - you could also say stylish. We Germans like to keep things cozy and traditional, without going too overboard.
It all started with the Advent wreath
What definitely shouldn't be missing when it comes to Christmas decorations is the Advent wreath! It is one of the oldest and most widespread Christmas traditions in the Christian West. It has its origins in Germany, or more precisely in Hamburg. In the middle of the 19th century, a Protestant pastor had a wooden candlestick set up there. This first Advent wreath consisted of 23 candles. Namely, 19 smaller red ones that represented the working days and four larger white ones for the holy Sundays. And of course at that time the vast majority of Advent wreaths were still handmade. The Advent wreath was followed by other relics for Christmas decorations over the course of the 19th century and especially at the beginning of the 20th century. Arches of lights, which had their origins in mining, now became part of Advent customs. Today they are known as candle arches. Candlesticks, lanterns and candle holders provided guiding light during the dark season. The Advent calendar, which was originally designed for children, was also created at this time. And people increasingly began to sing the Advent songs we still know today. Since the First World War, the Advent wreath has also been used by Catholics, New Apostolics and other religious communities. Candlelight commonly symbolizes the light that Jesus Christ brought into the world. Since then, it has traditionally been set up on December 1st. But the Advent wreath was just the beginning. People were now investing more and more time and work into decorating their homes for Christmas. And especially since the second half of the 20th century, Christmas decorations have enjoyed great popularity in this country. The Advent wreath is still a classic table decoration for Christmas. Advent wreaths made of ceramic - handmade and elaborately painted and decorated - are a stylish alternative to the classic wreath made of twigs.
Christmas parties and Christmas decorations
Christmas is a very old tradition. The first recorded celebration to pay homage to the birth of Jesus took place in 381 AD. instead of. Over the course of the Middle Ages, Christmas became more and more of a ritual custom. Christmas was a religious, church ritual that was reserved for clerical and upper middle class circles. Until around 200 years ago, the majority of the population had neither the means nor the time to organize a Christmas celebration at home. That changed fundamentally in the 19th century. From now on, Christmas increasingly took place in the family circle. Christmas is no longer just the celebration of the birth of Jesus, but also the celebration of love - and the giving of presents! This is particularly evident in the fact that the gift giving, which is now the real highlight of Christmas, usually takes place in the closest circle of family and friends. This usually includes a Christmas tree and Christmas tree baubles, Christmas presents and of course Christmas decorations. This is often still traditionally made by hand by the whole family. At least the house is decorated together.
