HB faience is created by inglaze painting. After the first firing, a white covering glaze is applied to the ceramics. Red is considered a "volatile color" and often fades in the smooth firing. All colors belong to Hedwig Bollhagen's typical faience decors, which are to be understood as a homage to the farmer's pottery that she so admired.
